CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) module workshops are an opportunity for candidates to network with one another, discuss course material, and develop enabling competencies. We have previously posted on how to prepare for workshops and below we outline what to expect within workshops and how they will help you in your CPA education and career.
Workshops are an integral part of learning in CPA PEP and are designed to help you develop enabling competencies and establish approaches you will use throughout your career, rather than being focused on exam preparation. However, the workshops do contain some elements that will help guide you through your immediate goal of passing the module exam.
Timing and Location
The sessions run on weekends, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. When you register for a module you select your preferred workshop city, and specific locations are posted on the CPAWSB website homepage two weeks before the workshop date. The locations are chosen based on sign up and not amenities therefore, you should consider bringing something to eat and drink as many locations have limited options available.
Activities in the workshops include individual work, group work, small and large group discussion, short presentations, and hands-on activities. Come prepared by bringing the D2L material downloaded onto your computer and your pre-workshop work completed. Before beginning each activity, your session leader will outline the learning objectives and guidelines.
CPA PEP workshops are a great place to start developing your professional network. They are filled with people who are working toward similar goals and you are likely to encounter many of them throughout your career. Spend time getting to know some of your fellow candidates and possibly form study groups.
Rules and Expectations
If you need to miss some or all of a workshop, request an accommodation well before the session. The School’s website outlines the process for requesting accommodations and circumstances in which an accommodation is granted. In cases of emergency absences, contact the School as soon as possible.
While you are at the workshop, you are participating in a professional program. Disrespectful, unprofessional, and disruptive behaviour is noted, and you may be asked to leave the room or discuss the situation with the session leader at the next break. Depending on the nature of the disruption, you may be subject to penalties such as make-up assignments, paying a fine, or being denied workshop credit.
