Important Updates on CPA Preparatory Courses

The CPA profession is pleased to provide additional information on changes to CPA preparatory courses. As announced in July 2019, the CPA preparatory courses are undergoing significant changes designed to improve the student experience and provide additional flexibility in course delivery.

Registration for the CPA preparatory courses opened the week of October 21, 2019, and all students with active enrollment status and annual dues paid for the current academic year received an email notification with specific registration instructions.

Below, we provide more details about the flexible model of CPA preparatory courses and what you can expect moving forward.

Schedule

Beginning with the 2020 academic year (classes start November 30, 2019), the CPA preparatory courses changes from a four-semester to five-semester schedule. Please view the schedules page on our website to see the 2020 five-semester core course schedule, the supplemental webinar schedule, and the 2020 exam schedule.

Effective November 30, 2019, two changes are being introduced to the delivery of the CPA preparatory courses:

  1. The Burnaby in-class delivery option will no longer be offered.
  2. To provide optimal class sizes, we will combine the two previously-offered webinar times (Alberta/BC and Saskatchewan/Manitoba) into a single, twice-weekly webinar for all students in Western Canada. Due to time zones, classes will start and end later than before for some students. To accommodate the different time zones across the region, webinars will be recorded and recording links will be provided to anyone registered in the webinar delivery option. Students can view the 2020 webinar delivery schedule here.

Registration

The flexible model of CPA preparatory courses allows students to register for courses and exams separately. Students can register for any course they’re eligible for at any time.

For non-core courses, there are no longer set registration periods and access to materials will be provided within five business days of registration. Each non-core course concludes with a final exam that must be written at a CPAWSB exam centre on a scheduled exam date within one year of the initial course registration. Exam registration will be available in My CPA portal following course registration.

For core courses, there are no longer set registration periods; however, course start dates and registration deadlines are fixed. Students can register for their preferred start date and will receive access to materials at least one week before the course starts. Core courses include six instructional weeks with quizzes and projects and conclude with a final exam that must be written at a CPAWSB exam centre on a scheduled exam date within one year of the course start date. Exam registration will be available in My CPA portal following course registration.

Policies

The CPA Harmonized Education Policies for the CPA preparatory courses are being updated to reflect changes to course delivery. It is critical that all students review and understand these policies when they become available as they will reflect the changes to the course and exam registration practices, including timing and withdrawals.

We also encourage students to carefully read through the CPA preparatory courses student guide before registering.
