Changes to CPA PEP Core and Elective Modules Effective Winter 2018

The Winter 2018 offering (modules starting in late January) of the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) core and elective modules will have substantial changes for the first time since the program launched in 2013. These changes, which will be in effect January 2018, incorporate feedback from candidates and facilitators and will benefit candidates through additional resources, a more comprehensive assignment and grading structure, and enhanced feedback.

Updated Resources and Feedback

Desire2Learn (D2L) will have a redesigned layout and dynamic interface that will allow candidates to access course content from their desktops, tablets, or smartphones.

CPA Canada Learning eBooks:

The Oracle will no longer be available and will be leveraged into seven searchable Learning eBooks. One eBook will be available for each of the six technical competency areas and one for the enabling competencies.

Certification Resource Centre (CRC):

The new Certification Resource Centre (CRC) will be a central resource repository for CPA certification program (education, practical experience, and evaluation) materials. Many candidate guidance documents (candidate guide, exam preparation documents, etc.) will move from the D2L homepage to the CRC.

Introduction to CPA PEP:

Module Zero will be replaced by the new Introduction to CPA PEP module and will include additional resources such as self-assessment tools, sub-modules containing readings and videos, and the Core 1 Survival Guide.

Enhanced Feedback:

Restructured feedback guides for the assignment problems and practice cases will have all assessment opportunities appearing on a single tab and feedback provided for each available level.

Changes Impacting Core Modules Only

Learning eBooks:

Learning eBook chapters will be assigned and, where possible, aligned with the materials in each week of the core modules. Each chapter will have a corresponding practice quiz for review.

Quizzes:

Candidates will need to complete weekly, automatically-marked quizzes consisting of 25 questions from the assigned Learning eBook chapter quizzes.

Assignment Problems:

New assignment problems with a technical focus will replace the immersive case. Candidates will have the opportunity to complete the problems without time constraints and facilitators will grade and provide feedback on them.

Weekly Practice Cases:

Revised weekly, 60-minute practice cases will closely align with the exam blueprint. Facilitators will grade and provide feedback on them.

Peer-reviewed Assignments:

No longer part of the Core modules.

Weekly Webinars:

CPAWSB will hold optional weekly webinars including a 20-minute Learning eBook topic debrief and at least 20 minutes of questions and answers. Webinar recordings will be available.

Core Module Exam eligibility

Candidates will be required achieve an overall module grade of 75 percent or higher to be eligible to write the exam. The module exam determines eligibility to proceed to the next module. The overall module grade consists of:

  • Quizzes and workshop pre-work: 30 percent
  • Assignment problems: 35 percent
  • Weekly practice cases: 30 percent
  • Workshop participation: 5 percent (attendance continues to be mandatory and failure to attend can result in ineligibility to write module exam)

Changes Impacting Elective Modules

Additional substantial changes to the elective modules will be communicated in 2018 and effective in 2019. In addition to the new resources listed above, changes starting in Winter 2018 include:

Enhanced Examination Feedback

Additional enabling skills feedback will be provided via the module transcript to candidates who are unsuccessful on elective module exams starting with exams written in March 2018. Module transcripts will include statements specific to the case and the individual candidate’s performance to help candidates understand how to improve.

Peer-reviewed Assignments

No longer part of the elective modules.
