Ask the CPA Preparatory Courses Student Experience Team: Fall or Winter Start?

In this “Ask an Advisor” series, we answer questions regularly received by the different teams responsible for CPA course and module administration. This week, we focus on a question received by the CPA preparatory courses Student Experience team.

Dear Advisor,

My transcript assessment results were released today, and I have core prerequisite courses that I have to complete. I want to take them with the CPA Western School of Business but, I’m not sure if I can take them in the Fall or Winter due to personal commitments. I’m planning on registering in a core course.

What do you recommend I do?

Thank you,

CPA preparatory courses student

Dear CPA preparatory courses student,

Thank you for the great question!

Registration is now open for the CPA preparatory courses. You register for courses and exams separately, and registration is now available for courses and exams taking place within the 2020/2021 academic year, which ends March 31, 2021.

One of the first things you should consider is whether you would like to register in the self-study/distance or webinar-delivered core course. Both options include the same:

  • Online notes and resources
  • Projects and quizzes (with the same deadlines)
  • Access to a discussion board.

The webinar delivery option is an additional six hours of instruction per week with a facilitator. The core courses offered with webinar delivery alternate every semester. Please refer to the webinar schedule for more information. If you are registered in the webinar option and are unable to attend a scheduled live lesson, then you will be able to access a recorded version at your convenience.

If you register for the distance option, you will approach the CPA preparatory course materials on your own using the same resources as the webinar option, without weekly online instruction.  Please  visit the FAQ section of our website for frequently asked questions and answers.

Another important consideration is your enrollment status. To complete your outstanding prerequisites with the CPAWSB, you must have an active enrollment, which means that you will be required to pay student dues when you submit your admission application. Student dues are aligned with our academic year, which starts on April 1 and ends on March 31.

Students are required to maintain an active student status so that they can access the enrollment links for courses and exams in subsequent academic years. The 2020/2021 academic year started on April 1, 2020, and will end on March 31, 2021. The 2021/2022 academic year will begin on April 1, 2021, and will end on March 31, 2022.

Enrolling with CPAWSB in the 2020 Semester 4 or 2020 Semester 5 academic session will require you to pay full-year student dues of $580.00 + GST.

Students who enroll with CPAWSB in 2020 Semester 4 can register in four academic sessions:

  1. 2020 Semester 4
  2. 2020 Semester 5
  3. 2021 Semester 1
  4. 2021 Semester 2

Students who enroll with CPAWSB in 2020 Semester 5 can register in three academic sessions:

  1. 2020 Semester 5
  2. 2021 Semester 1
  3. 2021 Semester 2

New students who enroll with CPAWSB half-way through the 2020/2021 academic year are eligible for a one-time-only reduced student dues amount of $290.00 + GST. Full-year dues are required annually for each academic year to continue registering in CPA preparatory courses. Due amounts for 2021/2022 have not yet been posted.

Students who enroll with CPAWSB in  2021 Semester 1 can register in two academic sessions:

  1. 2021 Semester 1
  2. 2021 Semester 2

Students who enroll with CPAWSB in  2021 Semester 2 can register in one academic session:

  1. 2021 Semester 2
